Terrell and Shaw met as roommates in 2012 while doing Teach For America and came up with the idea to cultivate mentorship opportunities for black men, from "cradle to career."

Profound Gentlemen was included on the Forbes 30 Under 30 – Social Entrepreneurs list in 2017.
